- If the check has a low number or no
pre-printed account or account holder
information on it, use extra caution before
accepting the check.
- Check to ensure that the date written on
the check is accurate. A post dated check
may provide the check writer with a defense
in a criminal check fraud case.
- Check to ensure that the written dollar
amount matches
the number dollar amount on the check.
- Inspect the check to see if the name of
the payee appears to have been changed or if
the check appears to have been altered in
any way.
- Check to see that the signature on the
check matches the name printed at the top of
the check.
- Always insist on photo identification
and record the identification number and
state of issue on the FRONT of the check.
Bank stamps may later cover up valuable
information that is written on the back of
checks.
- Trust your instincts! If you have any
reason to be suspicious of the check writer,
ask questions or ask for another form of
payment.
