Prepare Now:
- Identify local media stations used for emergency information.
- Know hazardous substances produced, stored in your area.
- Make sure that the phone number to Chemtrec 800 424-9300 is readily available.
- Learn Shelter In Place Procedures (Procedures described below).
- Learn location of ventilation system shut-offs.
- Repair seals around windows, doors and basements.
Act Now (If you are a first responder):
- Follow hazardous materials response procedures
Act Now (If you are a witness or live nearby):
- Get and stay upwind and call 911.
- If you are the first responder, call Chemtrec as (800) 424-9300.
- Listen to the designated radio/TV station, emergency alert system; follow emergency instructions immediately.
- Bring household members and pets indoors.
- Stay far away from the site if possible.
- Keep your body fully covered.
- Avoid eating and drinking anything uncovered.
- Prepare household for possible evacuation.
- Close all exterior and interior doors and windows.
- If told to Shelter-in Place:
- Turn off ventilation systems and fans, clothes dryer, heating and air conditioning; if possible, close fireplace damper.
- Close window curtains, shades and blinds.
- Go to the above-ground room with the fewest windows and doors.
- Bring disaster supplies kit.
- Wet towels and jam in cracks under doors.
- If possible, tape around doors and windows and block air vents using plastic sheeting or bags.
- Stay inside until the radio announces that it's safe or tells you to evacuate.
- Contact your local Fire Department or Emergency Management Agency for more information on shelter in place.
