High Winds

Prepare Now:

  • Buy a battery-powered radio that has the NOAA All Hazards capabilities.  Make sure you know the frequencies for the local radio stations as well as the NOAA transmitter frequency for the area you are in. 
  • Learn what tornado conditions look like.
  • Know the difference between a watch (the incident may happen) and a warning (conditions are such that the incident is going to occur).
  • Identify shelter room (e.g. basement, storm cellar or an interior room).
  • Plan to secure and evacuate a mobile home for adequate shelter.
  • Know the shelter locations in places where you spend time.
  • Remove branches and any tall trees that may fall on your house.

Act Now:

  • Report revolving funnel-shaped clouds to authorities.
  • Listen to radio for weather alerts/emergency instructions.
  • Seek shelter immediately in basement or interior room on lower level; take position under a sturdy table.
  • Stay away from windows, doors, outside walls; do not open windows.
  • If not sheltered, lie flat in a ditch with your hands covering your head.
  • Avoid buildings with wide span roofs.
  • If you are in a vehicle, get out immediately, seek shelter in a ditch.
