| Structural Fire |
Prepare Now:
- Know how to respond to different fire types.
- Make ABC extinguishers accessible on every floor (call the Fire Department for training).
- Install smoke detectors; test once each month; replace batteries at least twice each year.
- Identify 2 escape routes from each room.
- Conduct fire drills.
- Make sure windows are not nailed or painted shut.
- Establish an outside meeting place; never go back into a burning building.
- Know where flammable materials are in your home or garage and dispose of them properly after use.
- Do not overload electrical outlets.
- Keep folding or chain style ladder stored in each upstairs bedroom.
- Mark windows of children or others who may not self-rescue.
- Make sure your address on your house or the curb is clearly visible and the fire trucks can reach your home.
During a Fire:
- Call 911, or call the Fire Department in areas without 911 service.
- Warn other occupants.
- Pull the fire alarm.
- Get out of the burning building.
- For small fires use an ABC fire extinguisher; baking soda or a pan lid for small oil or grease fires.
- Feel the door to see if it is hot before opening it. If is hot, a very low window may be an option for escape. Otherwise, wave a distress cloth out the window.
- If leaving, be prepared to crawl. (Smoke and heat rise).
- If your clothes are on fire, STOP, DROP and ROLL.
- Use a stairwell. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS!
