In addition to that training, we also conduct disaster exercises to help response agencies, industries and other community organizations be better prepared for emergency / disasters. There are many other courses, opportunities, and exercises including lifesaving and preparedness planning.

Independent Study (Internet Training)
  • The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS): A system mandated by HSPD-5 that provides a consistent nationwide approach for Federal, State, local, and tribal governments; the private sector; and nongovernmental organizations to work effectively and efficiently together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from domestic incidents, regardless of cause, size, or complexity. To provide for interoperability and compatibility among Federal, State, local, and tribal capabilities, the NIMS includes a core set of concepts, principles, and terminology. HSPD-5 identifies these as the ICS; multiagency coordination systems; training; identification and management of resources (including systems for classifying types of resources); qualification and certification; and the collection, tracking, and reporting of incident information and incident resources.  The online NIMS/ICS classes are offered free-of-charge.  Many local grants are contingent on the ability of Sweetwater County to maintain its' "NIMS compliancy" in order to do this Sweetwater County Emergency Management submits annual reports.  Please help us maintain our "NIMS Compliancy" by forwarding a copy of your certificate or "successful completion" email to our office.

Computer Availability - We realize that many of our volunteers may not have access to the internet and many of the training opportunities that are provided through the the internet. To alleviate this problem we have computers in our department that are available to our volunteers. We are asking that our volunteers complete the NIMS and ICS courses but also understand that there are those of you that would like to take additional EMI (Emergency Management Institute) courses or other applicable courses. Please make arrangements with our office prior to coming in to utilize these computers so we can avoid any scheduling conflicts.
